We are delighted that we have been shortlisted for our Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour project for the Kamra tal-Periti Premju Emanuele Luigi Galizia. We have already been awarded both the Din l-Art Helwa prize for The Rehabilitation and Re-Use of Buildings and the Malta Architect Award in Hospitality, Tourism Accomodation and Leisure for our Macina project.
Our submission
We wanted to share with you our submissions for this exciting project. Our design began with the desire to bring the history of the building and the surrounding area to light, by restoring it to its former glory. The main intervention within the structure was to join the existing two parts of the building, that is the Macina and the Annex, through the creation of a panoramic lift and a lightweight bridge its former glory, as a shining beacon of Senglea’s proud history.

The concept behind all design decisions was to contribute towards the urban regeneration of Senglea and to focus on the culture and character of the Cottonera area, so as to satisfy the increasing demand in cultural tourism. The new layout was designed to maximise the traveller’s engagement with the history of the building and the culture of the area. Through the design of a separate entrance for the restaurant from the rear of the site, the public can gain limited access to the building and enjoy picturesque views of the harbour. All modern interventions were designed so as to be visually distinguishable from the remaining original masonry, in particular to the reconstruction of the vault damaged in the War, the introduction of the pool and the creation of a bridge and lift connecting the Macina and the Annex Building
